From Pilots to Practices: A Scoping Review of GenAI-Enabled Personalization in Computer Science Education

Research / Other Relevance: 3/10 2025 paper

This scoping review synthesizes 32 studies examining how generative AI enables personalized learning in higher-education computer science courses, identifying five application domains and analyzing design patterns that preserve productive struggle versus those that enable cognitive offloading. The review proposes an exploration-first adoption framework for integrating GenAI into CS education while mitigating risks around academic integrity, over-reliance, privacy, and equity.

Generative AI enables personalized computer science education at scale, yet questions remain about whether such personalization supports or undermines learning. This scoping review synthesizes 32 studies (2023–2025) purposively sampled from 259 records to map personalization mechanisms and effectiveness signals in higher-education CS contexts. We identify five application domains—intelligent tutoring, personalized materials, formative feedback, AI-augmented assessment, and code review—and analyz
